Augusta man accused of threatening with knife
AUGUSTA — A local man was arrested Monday following an incident in which he allegedly brandished a knife at witnesses, who had earlier reported he was trespassing and had thrown something on their property.
Benjamin Peterson, 28, of Augusta, was summoned on a charge of terrorizing and was arrested and taken to Kennebec County jail on a probation hold after the approximately 5:30 p.m. incident.
Sgt. Richard Dubois said police had stopped on the side of Riverside Drive to talk to Peterson, who was on foot. People at the scene reported Peterson had thrown something in a nearby ditch. Police were unable to find anything in the ditch and both they, and Peterson, left the scene.
Shortly afterward, witnesses told police Peterson returned to the property and walked onto it. The property owner told Peterson to get off the site and Peterson, Dubois said, pulled out a knife.
Nearby residents, who were cutting some trees with a chainsaw, witnessed the incident and responded, forcing Peterson to leave. Dubois said they followed him down the road and pointed Peterson out to police when they arrived.
