AUGUSTA — Every player in the starting lineup had at least one hit for Gardiner in the opening round of the American Legion Zone 2 baseball tournament Saturday and several had more than one.

AUGUSTA — Madison upset top seeded Post 51, 6-2, while No. 2 Gardiner stopped third-seeded South China Subway, 12-9, in the opening round of the Zone 2 American Legion baseball tournament Saturday.
ON THE GREEN: Women’s groups combine for new state golf title
The three-day championship which begins Monday at the Augusta Country Club is billed as the 1st Annual Women’s Maine Amateur Championship. Since 1977, the state has been divided into two women’s golf organizations — the Women’s Maine State Golf Association and the Southern Maine Women’s Golf Association — and they’ve held separate championships.

The Augusta Country Club could use some new members and a steady stream of revenue from outside events. Toward that end, the club added director of club operations to superintendent Chris Barnicoat’s duties and hired a couple of new people in Randy Blouin and Elizabeth Strout.
