While work bringing major natural gas lines into the city is underway, work putting in smaller pipelines connecting to residences could take several years, city officials said Thursday.

Only two companies, Augusta-based Summit Natural Gas of Maine, and Brunswick-based Maine Natural Gas, bid by Wednesday’s deadline to supply natural gas to 30 state buildings in Augusta, Vassalboro, Waterville and Hallowell.

City Manager William Bridgeo said the city has received some complaints about the natural gas pipeline work and the toll its taking on the streets and businesses.
