David Smith, of Hope, center, and Clark Cole, far right, inspect the evaporator in the sugar house Friday at Haulk’s Maple in Madison. The visit was part of the Somerset County Sugarmakers Association’s Maple Mania weekend, which started Thursday. Visitors to six maple farms can get tours of sugar shacks and learn about how the maple syrup season went for local sugar producers this year. At Haulk’s Maple, owner Diane Haulk said this year “wasn’t the greatest, but it was better than last year.”
