    The story has long been told that Quaker inhabitants here would nod, rather than speak to, neighbors. Hence the name. But the tale has not been confirmed, as Kay Soldier, historian for the Windham Historical Society, notes: "For more years than I care to count, I have searched for the origin of Land of Nod road name – old proprietors' records, maps, Massachusetts records, etc. and even old town reports – however, the origin (apart from the Biblical reference) eludes me."
