Maine Maple Producers President Scott Dunn, of Buxton, watches as Gov. Janet Mills hangs a sap bucket on a spile she hammered into the tree during a Maine Maple Sunday promotional event Tuesday at the Blaine House in Augusta. The annual tradition sets the stage for Maine Maple Sunday, which will be celebrated March 22 this year. The event is an opportunity to pay tribute to an industry that is estimated to generate 8.7 million in economy activity and support more than 800 full- and part-time jobs across the state. Maine has the largest maple producing county in the country — Somerset County — and is home to the third largest syrup industry in the country, according to a news release from the governor's office. The full list of participating Maine Maple Producers can be viewed at mainemapleproducers.com.
