Carroll Whitten scales the fence to the heifer pen at his family’s farm in Manchester Tuesday. The 89-year-old said he likes to check the condition of the herd every day, but more often as calf season is underway. Whitten said he hopes to have 23 cows born on his farm by summer.

David Walker, who also serves as the grand master for the Masons in Maine, said the Masons have been meeting in Monmouth for 152 years and celebrate rites at a former church on Main Street.
