I find it interesting that Sen. Susan Collins says Graham Platner should not be elected because of his history. But Collins is willing to support a convicted felon and someone who has been found liable for sexual abuse? Also, someone who bragged about grabbing a women’s privates? Bruce LindScarborough

The truth about Maine’s labor participation rate | Letter
In a June 11 letter to editor (“Struggling in Maine? Here’s why.”), the writer suggested Mainers should work more to raise the “lowest labor participation rate in New England.” Quick research reveals that the low rate is a function of Maine having the oldest population in the nation, not Mainers being a bunch of deadbeats. […]
Fossel came up short on Trump slush fund | Letter
I read Jim Fossel’s column every week. He seems to have researched and thought things out in depth. While I do not always agree with him, at least his comments are thought-provoking. In the May 24 Maine Sunday Telegram, Fossel went point-by-point arguing why everything President Trump did to get his gigantic slush fund and his […]
Voters need to reject corruption in November | Letter
This November, we will be choosing between Democratic and Republican candidates along with independent and third-party candidates. Most Democrats will be touting their experience and knowledge of governing in stark contrast to the Trump administration. Republicans feature candidates who admonish politicians who favor programs like Medicare and Obamacare. Choices in this election shouldn’t rely on […]
As Trump continues to trample on morality, where is the church? | Letter
I don’t believe that religion and politics mix. But when does politics stop being politics and becomes a clear-cut case of right vs. wrong? Case in point: My two best friends in grade school were Jewish kids whose families had suffered in the Holocaust. From an early age, I learned about concentration camps and gas […]
Let’s recommit to government by the people, not the PACs | Letter
Maine should support a constitutional amendment restoring the ability of Congress and the states to set reasonable limits on money in elections.
Heating oil prices are another casualty of war | Letter
The beautiful coastline of Maine apparently now reaches to the Strait of Hormuz. We have a century-old house that uses propane for radiator heat and hot water use. We have always done the annual service contract for supply and maintenance since we moved to Augusta eight years ago. The cost has risen pretty steadily year […]
On Graham Platner’s Nazi tattoo | Letter
In 2007, Graham Platner, a Marine from Maine (by his own admission, intoxicated at the time), entered a tattoo parlor in Croatia. He wanted a tattoo. His conscious choice, no matter how intoxicated he may have been, was a skull and crossbones chest tattoo closely resembling a Nazi Totenkopf (“death’s head”). The candidate would have us believe that, at that […]
Gruters op-ed exhibited more blind allegiance to Trump | Letter
I just read an opinion piece written by Joe Gruters, chairman of the Republican National Committee (“The fight for America’s future has kicked off in Maine,” June 10) . I believe his intent was to promote Sen. Susan Collins over Graham Platner. While I am not necessarily a Platner supporter, what Mr. Gruters professes is […]
Susan Collins is out of touch | Letter
Last year, during tax time, mail service to my retirement community was so sketchy that I asked the post office for help. They said it was out of their control and I should write my congressional representatives. I did, and each of them answered except for Sen. Susan Collins. Months later, I got a letter […]
