An 83-year-old Pittston man was struck by a vehicle and killed Monday about 5 p.m. as he walked on Route 194 in Pittston.

A news release from Kennebec County Interim Sheriff Ryan Reardon said the pedestrian died at the accident and the motorist, a 61-year-old woman, was uninjured.

Reardon said names were being withheld pending notification of families.

The crash forced officials to close a section of Route 194 near the Pittston Grange Hall for more than an hour, and motorists were detoured to either Route 126 or Kelley Road.

Reardon said a nurse was at the scene prior to rescue personnel and went to the aid of the pedestrian who did not regain consciousness.

The accident was being reconstructed by police and remains under investigation.

“There is no reason to believe there was any impairment of the driver,” Reardon also said in the release. “Other circumstances are being evaluated as part of the investigation.”

Pittston Fire Chief Jason Farris said volunteer firefighters responded as well.
