Several free Waterville area community Thanksgiving dinners are planned for Thursday, including ones in Cambridge, Oakland and Skowhegan.

The Messalonskee Thanksgiving Day Community Meal, which is in its 26th year, is scheduled to take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Messalonskee High School. The dinner, which was started by Bud and Josephine King and their family, serves about 1,000 people every year.

Organizer Mike Perkins said Wednesday that the dinner will include the preparation of about 50 turkeys.

In Skowhegan, a community Thanksgiving dinner is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Skowhegan Community Center. In Cambridge, a community Thanksgiving dinner is scheduled for 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cambridge General Store.

All of the dinners are free and open to the public.

Organizers behind the Cambridge dinner, which is in its first year, are hoping to make the event an annual one, said Tammy Thomas, manager of the Cambridge General Store.

She said the dinner was started to serve people in the area who don’t have families nearby.

“It’s a retirement area, and a lot of people may have family who get together the weekend before or weekend after Thanksgiving but not necessarily on Thanksgiving,” Thomas said. “So we decided to do that for the community, people who don’t have families or people who don’t have families here on Thanksgiving day.”

Reservations are not needed for any of the dinners. Those interested in delivery from the Oakland dinner can contact Mike Perkins at 474-6901.
