* A talk on Black Bears is set for 7 p.m. April 20 in Room C-13, UMF Roberts Learning Center. This time of year bears start to rub their eyes and leave hibernation. Although there are about 22,000 black bears in Maine, most of us never get a chance to see one. But that doesn’t keep bears from being a source of fascination and even controversy. Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologist Randy Cross has been up close and personal with these animals. He recently completed his 29th season of tracking bears and visiting their dens. This season he and his team visited 70 dens and 182 bears. In his work he enters dens to count, examine, and weigh adults and cubs. He also tags them to track their movements. Cross will share his knowledge, photographs, and experience about these animals. The free event is sponsored by UMF Division of Natural Sciences and Maine Audubon.

* There will be an Air Band competition at 8 p.m. April 26 at The Landing, UMF Olsen Student Center. The free event is sponsored by The Landing and Spring Fling.
