BIDDEFORD — A single-engine plane crashed into a home here Sunday night and set it on fire.

The Biddeford Fire Department said the plane slammed into 235 Granite Street Extension around 6 p.m. The plane hit the center of the four-bedroom, single-story ranch, blowing out windows and destroying the home’s interior. A section of the plane’s wing could be seen hanging off the front of the home.

The homeowners, Kim and Steve Myers, were not inside at the time of the crash. Interviewed at the scene, the couple said they found out what had happened when they came home to pick up their dog, Geneva, before leaving to have dinner at the home of Kim Myers’ sister.

It was unclear Sunday who was piloting the plane or how many people were in the aircraft when it plunged from the sky. The crash site is about one mile from the Biddeford Municipal Airport, but the plane’s departure and destination points were not immediately available.

Mark Beaulieu, who lives on nearby Bernard Avenue, said he heard the engine of a plane stall out and when he looked up, he saw the aircraft flying low to the ground.

Biddeford firefighters had the house fire under control by 7:15 p.m.
