AUGUSTA — U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud says the World Trade Organization made the right call when it ruled that China’s export restraints on some critical raw materials violate global trade rules.

The WTO ruled Tuesday that China was unfairly protecting its domestic manufacturers by limiting the export of nine raw materials that are used widely in the steel, aluminum and chemical industries.

Michaud, a Maine Democrat and chairman of the House Trade Working Group, applauds the ruling. Michaud says it makes clear that China restricted exports of raw materials for no other reason than to boost its own manufacturers to the detriment of those in other countries.

Michaud says follow-up will be needed to ensure that China complies with the ruling.
