LEWISTON — A woman whose decomposing body was found in an apartment building in Lewiston, Maine, has been identified as 38-year-old Danita Brown of New Gloucester.

The Maine Medical Examiner’s Office made positive identification and performed an autopsy today. Officials declined to say whether cause of death was determined.

Police described the woman’s death as suspicious.

State police said one of the building’s tenants, 20-year-old Robert Ryder, was taken into custody Tuesday and was being held at the Androscoggin County jail on a probation violation.

Maine Public Safety Department spokesman Steve McCausland says the probation violation is unrelated to the body’s discovery. Police, who were alerted late Monday, said the woman had been dead for weeks.
