UNITY — The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association will host the 2011 Great Maine Apple Day from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at the Common Ground Education Center, 294 Crosby Brook Road. Activities go on rain or shine.

The annual event celebrates the history, flavor and tradition of Maine apples. There will be educational workshops on apple art, cooking with old-time apple recipes, Maine’s rich apple history, wine and cider making, and organic apple tree care.

Visitors can see and taste rare and heirloom apple varieties. Experts will help identify mystery varieties.

Participants are encouraged to bring apples they have grown or discovered. There will be an apple-pie contest with tasting at 3:30 p.m.

Vendors will be selling local and organic apples and apple products, as well as baked goods, gourmet chocolates, wine and cheese.

Admission cost $4 for the general public or $2 for members of MOFGA or the Maine Pomological Society.
