WILTON — A 24-year-old man faces multiple charges after the state Fire Marshal’s Office accused him of intentionally burning his sport utility vehicle to collect insurance money.

Jesse Herrin, of Wilton, was arrested Monday on charges of arson, insurance fraud and filing a false report, according to Sgt. Ken Grimes, of the fire marshal’s office.

Herrin allegedly filed a false police report that his 2000 Chevrolet Suburban had been stolen, Grimes said. On July 12, 2009, the burned SUV was found on the side of Ridge Road in Chesterville, Grimes said.

Herrin collected about $5,000 from his insurance agency for the vehicle, and he was arrested after a witness provided new information about the arson, Grimes said.

He was released Monday from Franklin County Detention Center in Farmington after he posted $1,000 cash bail. His court date is set for Feb. 24.
