BELGRADE — A pair of Belgrade residents were injured in a Monday crash on Route 27 that sent a Jeep spinning into Belgrade Stream.

Ruth Langdon, 61, and Clinton Hanna, 26, were taken to local hospitals with what were believed to be non life-threatening injuries, said Maine State Police Trooper Diane Perkins-Vance. The victims were taken by ambulance to Inland Hospital in Waterville and MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

The crash occurred about 8:30 a.m., as Langdon, driving a 2002 Pontiac four-door car north on Route 27, started a left turn into a driveway just south of Hammond Lumber.

Hanna, who was driving home from work in his 2001 Jeep Wrangler, came up behind Langdon as she waited to turn. Hanna hit Langdon’s Pontiac from behind, Perkins-Vance said.

Hanna’s Jeep spun across the southbound lane and through Hayden Park, which is on the shore of Belgrade Stream, on the west side of the road. The Jeep landed on its wheels partially submerged in the stream, more than 50 yards away from the where the crash happened, Perkins-Vance said.

Belgrade fire and rescue workers suited up in cold water gear to wade into the icy stream to rescue Hanna, Perkins-Vance said. Hanna remained dry inside his Jeep as he waited for help.

Langdon’s Pontiac, meanwhile, was spun around by the impact and stopped in the southbound lane facing the opposite direction.

Perkins-Vance said driver inattention and speed appear to have been factors in the crash.

The crash occurred in a 55 mile-per-hour zone. Police had not filed any charges as of Monday.

Langdon’s car was totaled, Perkins-Vance said. Hanna’s Jeep sustained front-end damage.
