Christmas night fire hits Richmond home

RICHMOND — A fire Christmas night that started around a wood stove badly damaged a Plummer Road home.
Susan Richardson owns the home at 218 Plummer Road and lives there alone, said Richmond Fire Chief Andrew Pierce, but three people were inside when the fire broke out.

All were able to get out safely and nobody was hurt fighting the fire, Pierce said.
The home sustained fire, smoke and water damage, primarily to a wall and ceiling around the wood stove. Pierce estimated the fire caused $20,000 in damage.

The few personal belongings that were damaged probably can be salvaged, Pierce said. The home is insured, Pierce said. Richardson is living with a friend in a neighboring town.
The fire broke out around 10:45 p.m. Sunday.

“It was called in as a chimney fire,” Pierce said. “When I arrived flames were coming through the back wall and trying to get through the roof.”

Firefighters from Litchfield, Dresden, Bowdoinham and Bowdoin were called to help put the fire out, but Richmond firefighters were able to douse the flames in about 25 minutes, just as the first mutual aid trucks arrived.

“The guys did a good job of knocking it down,” Pierce said.

Pierce said the fire started near where the stove pipe connected to the chimney.

“It was somewhere around the thimble, where the two meet, is where it started,” he said.

Woman rescued from Sidney stream

SIDNEY — A local woman was injured Sunday when the sport utility vehicle she was driving skidded out of control and wound up upside down in a stream off West River Road.

Diane Libby-Gilbert, 48, was taken by ambulance to MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Thayer Campus in Waterville with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, according to a report filed by Kennebec County Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Pierce.

Libby-Gilbert was driving her 2011 Kia west on Drummond Road around 5:30 p.m. Sunday when she tried to stop at the West River Road intersection, Pierce said. The SUV continued to slide on the snow-covered road and skidded across West River Road and over an embankment before going airborne, Pierce said. The Kia rolled over several times before landing on its roof in a stream bed, Pierce said.
