CHELSEA — A local man on Tuesday remained at a Lewiston hospital after crashing his car Sunday night on Hankerson Road.
Christopher T. Stevens, 33, was flown by Life Flight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center after crashing his car and becoming trapped around 8 p.m. Sunday, said Capt. Daniel Davies of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.
A crash report was unavailable on Tuesday, but Davies said Stevens was driving his 2000 Volkswagen Jetta north when he swerved and crossed the center line. The car left the road, causing extensive damage and trapping Stevens inside.
“Stevens’ vehicle was found by a passer-by who happened to notice his vehicle in the ditch,” Davies said.
“Stevens was bleeding badly and was unconscious.”
The accident remains under investigation, Davies said. Stevens’ blood will be tested for intoxicants, which is standard procedure for crashes that cause serious injury, Davies said.

Friday snow caused
big problems on roads
The light coating of snow that fell across the region Friday created big problems for central Maine drivers, police said.
Maine State Police Lt. David Tripp said that troopers responded to 13 crashes on Interstate 295 between Topsham and Gardiner.
All of the crashes, none of which caused serious injuries, were because of road conditions and speed, Tripp said in a prepared release. The speed limit was reduced to 45 miles per hour the length of the turnpike.
