AUGUSTA — All Capitol-area public school districts closed today and for many it is the first snow day of the year.

Classes were canceled in Regional School Units 2, 4, 11, 12, 18 and 38, as well as Alternative Organizational Structures 92 and 97 and Augusta Schools.

RSU 12 also canceled tonight’s school board meeting. The meeting has been rescheduled for Jan. 19 at the Chelsea School.

RSU 38 Superintendent Rich Abramson said that when he awoke at 4:15 a.m. this morning to monitor the weather, the forecast called for snow to start in central Maine about 7 a.m.

However, snow did not start falling locally until the late morning. Even though the morning commute was clear, today’s storm would have caused an early dismissal and a potentially dangerous ride home, Abramson said.

“It’s 12 o’clock right now, and it would be very unpleasant to have kids on the buses right now,” he said.
