WASHINGTON — A St. George teen was injured this morning when her car slid into a utility pole on Route 220.

Katherine Holmes, 18, who had to be cut from the vehicle, was taken by ambulance to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport with what were believed to be non life-threatening injuries, including a broken leg, said Knox County Sheriff Donna Dennison.

A 16-year-old Washington boy riding with Holmes did not appeared to be injured but was taken to the hospital as a precaution, Dennison said.

Neither Holmes nor her passenger was wearing a seat belt, Dennison said.

The crash occurred near around 8 a.m., near Sukeforth Lane as Holmes drove her 2003 Ford Taurus south on snow-covered Route 220.

“Due to unsafe speed and road conditions she slid off the road into a pole,” Dennison said.

The impact snapped the pole in half and badly damaged Holmes’ car. Washington firefighters used extrication equipment to free Holmes from the vehicle.
