AUGUSTA — Rep. David Burns, R-Alfred, has resigned his seat in the Maine House amid an ethics investigation by the Attorney General’s Office.

House Speaker Robert Nutting announced the resignation. “I believe this is the appropriate step for him to take, as we Republicans insist our members maintain the highest ethical standards possible,” Nutting said in the statement.

Nutting said the Attorney General’s Office has concluded its investigation, but a spokeswoman said earlier today the review is ongoing.

The Attorney General’s Office began its investigation in December after the state ethics commission found Burns violated multiple campaign finance laws while running for state representative. Earlier in January, Burns resigned from his seat on the Alfred Board of Selectmen.

Burns has declined to answer questions about the allegations, saying his attorney has advised him not to speak.

Democrats have been calling for his resignation for weeks, while Republican leaders have said they wanted to wait for the completion of the criminal investigation.
