WINTHROP — Flooding caused by a exterior broken pipe has forced the closure of the children’s area of the C. M. Bailey Public Library for at least a week and has temporarily placed the upstairs bathroom out of service.

Library Director Richard Fortin said today that weekend staff found a constantly running and overflowing toilet in the Kids Room, which is on the ground floor of the 96-year-old building.

A staff member, assisted by a patron who volunteered to help, mopped the floor and emptied buckets much of Saturday to try to minimize damage until some emergency plumbing could be done, Fortin said.

Damage estimates are not yet available.
