Deputy driving SUV kills deer

FARMINGTON — A Franklin County sheriff’s deputy driving a county-owned sport utility vehicle on Route 4 collided with a deer, which died at the scene early Tuesday morning.

Deputy Christopher Chase was headed north on the highway when two deer jumped out of the woods into the path of the 2009 Ford Explorer near Fox Run Lane at about 9 a.m., according to Farmington police Sgt. Michael Adcock.

Chase was on duty and missed the first deer before striking and killing the second animal. Adcock said the SUV had about $2,000 worth of damage and was still drivable, being taken back to the sheriff’s office to be assessed for repairs.

Adcock called the incident an unavoidable accident and that speed was not a factor in causing the collision in a 55 mph zone. Chase was not injured and there were no tickets issued.
