READFIELD — The new Maranacook Senior Center/Cafe at Maranacook Community Middle School welcomed 16 local residents, ranging in age from 50 to 87, in its first week of operation this past week.

Students greeted attendees upon their arrival at the center directed them as they parked their cars. On Monday, Lynn Boardway of Spectrum Generations facilitated a discussion about senior needs and resources. On Wednesday, participants observed a science class demonstration. Poet Claire Hersom taught four students how to write rap poems that they then read to the adults at the center. Hersom also read her poetry and led a discussion with students and seniors about writing poetry.

Activities for this week include learning origami with Liv Toftner on Monday and a discussion with Sandra Wright of the Mount Vernon Community Partnership about building housing for rural elders on Wednesday.

Activities planned at the center include projects with students, a HealthReach RSVP Bone Builders exercise program, hiking and gardening, guest speakers, and more.

The center will be open from 9 to 11 a.m. every Monday and Wednesday and will provide tea, coffee, muffins, games and cards and presentations.

Attendees are encouraged to bring knitting, crafts, books, writing, instruments and friends. Seniors are also encouraged to stay for the school’s lunch, which is served at 11 a.m. Menus vary; the cost is $4.
