A woman who was apparently changing her clothes while driving through Hallowell lost control of her vehicle Friday and crashed into a light pole in Stevens Commons, police said.
Hallowell police Chief Christopher Giles said the police department started getting calls about erratic driving shortly before 9:30 a.m.
Giles said the woman, 79, lost control of her vehicle and nearly caused a head-on collision on Second Street, and while driving up Winthrop Street left the roadway and struck the light pole.
The woman was changing her shoes at the time of the crash.
She was issued a summons charging her with driving to endanger and failing to maintain control of a motor vehicle under Maine’s distracted driving law.
Giles said the estimated cost of the damage to the cast-iron light pole is more than $4,000.
