SKOWHEGAN — The National Drug Control Policy agency recently announced that more than $12 million in Drug Free Communities grants have been made to 87 communities.

The Greater Somerset Public Health Collaborative, Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition, representing all but eastern Somerset County, is one of these grantees. The coalition will receive $125,000 a year for up to five years to involve and engage local communities in preventing and reducing substance use among youth.

The coalition will specifically work to address underage drinking, and marijuana use. One strategy the coalition will use is the Student Intervention Reintegration Program. Rob Rogers, a counselor at Youth and Family Services and the new Project Coordinator for the Drug Free Communities effort, will run several sessions of this program for youth who have been identified by school staff or police as users of alcohol and drugs.
