AUGUSTA — Ticket sales for the $640 million Mega Millions jackpot set a record in Maine.

Maine State Lottery Operations Director Tim Poulin said more than 1.5 million tickets were sold between the last Mega Millions drawing Tuesday night and Friday afternoon. He expected sales in Maine to top $1.8 million by the drawing 11 p.m. Friday.

Poulin said the previous record for a lottery was in 2006, when $1.4 million worth of tickets were sold for a Powerball jackpot.
