NORTH ANSON — The Masonic Lodge began its first Bikes for Books program this week in an effort to encourage children to read.

From now until the end of the school year, about 130 students in kindergarten through grade five at Carrabec Community School will read as many books as they can in hopes of winning a bicycle.

They then complete small book reports, which are approved by a teacher and placed in a drawing, said David Adams, a member of Northern Star Lodge 28.

There are two boxes for each grade level, one for boys and one for girls, so two children in each grade will win a bicycle and helmet. The more they read, the greater their chances are of winning one of the 12 bikes donated by the masons and other groups, Adams said.
