OLD TOWN — Police say a University of Maine student has been killed in a single-vehicle accident in Old Town.

Police said 19-year-old Timothy Dodge, of Rockland, was driving toward the university campus in Orono at about 5:15 a.m. today when his car veered off U.S. Route 2 and struck a tree.

Police said it appeared he was killed instantly.

Capt. Kyle Smart told the Bangor Daily News that speed was factor. “Beyond that [little is known]. We’ll be doing chemical tests. We have a detective retracing his steps over the last day to see what he was up to,” which is a standard procedure, according to the newspaper.

The possibility that Dodge just fell asleep has also not been ruled out, the police captain said.
