MONMOUTH — A blanket draped over a doorway to keep in the heat was ignited by a burning fireplace ember, sparking a fire that destroyed a Pleasant Street home early this morning, officials said.
The emergency call came in just after midnight at 7 Pleasant St.
Monmouth Fire Chief Dan Roy said Gustavo Duran and his son, Michael, 26, were sleeping in the living room when the fire broke out.
“There were only two occupants in the building and they both made it out safely,” Roy said this morning. “They were sleeping in the first-floor living room where the fire originated. It looks like a spark ignited the blanket hanging over the doorway that was in close proximity to the fireplace. They were using the fireplace as well as an electric space heater.”
Roy said Gustavo Duran lives in Chelsea, Mass., and that this was his second home. He said Duran and his son were there to do some repairs and didn’t turn on the furnace.
About 60 firefighters from Monmouth, Greene, Leeds, Winthrop and Wales fought the blaze for four and a half hours, he said. There were no injuries.
Roy said Duran had homeowners’ insurance and that the father and son stayed in a hotel.
“The homeowner was going to check with his insurance company today,” he said. “That led me to believe it wasn’t necessary to call in Red Cross at this time.”
