Burn permits issued once again

AUGUSTA — Fire stations were issuing burn permits again this weekend — some for the first time in almost two weeks.

Sunday was rated as a Class 2 day, meaning the fire danger was moderate.

About a half dozen burn permits were issued by Augusta firefighters, and Winthrop residents also obtained burn permits in their town.

The Maine Forest Service issues daily reports on the “Predicted Class Day and Fire Danger” in seven zones throughout the state.

Persistent dry conditions recently had pushed the ratings into Class 4 or very high fire danger.

Permits are not issued on days when the rating is Class 3 or above.
