FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington recently announced upcoming events. All the following events are free and open to the public:

* The Fiddlehead Festival: A Celebration of Local Foods and Delicacies will begin at 9 a.m. today at Emery Community Arts Center and area locations.

The event is a day-long cooperative celebration of the benefits of local food. The keynote speech, “Understanding Maine’s Food System,” by Dr. Mark Lapping of USM’s Muskie School of Public Service will begin at 10 a.m.

Tables featuring local food producers will open at 9 a.m., and breakout sessions will feature discussions on local food ordinances, harvesting fiddleheads information, garden preparation, and a discussion panel on starting up as a farmer.

The Franklin County Fiddlers will provide music, and a wrap-up will be held at the Homestead.

* The Visual and Performing Arts department will feature “Mountains,” a six-hour meditative sound composition starting at 6 a.m. in Nordica Auditorium, UMF Merrill Hall.
