When I read in the paper about the cuts in services that the state has provided for low-income folk — MaineCare, health care coverage for more than 20,000 people, prescription drug coverage for senior citizens and funding for Head Start — I was ashamed.
Ashamed that this country, with all its wealth, would be reduced to treating its citizens in such a manner.
The blame game doesn’t get us anywhere. Someone, somewhere, wasn’t minding the store or, apparently, didn’t care.
The only conclusion that I can come up with is that there is a conspiracy at the top to wipe out the indigent — those of us who struggle each day to make ends meet and who rely so heavily on government welfare to survive.
If there are no jobs and if the price of living continues to rise and if these important life-saving programs continue to be cut, something’s going to give. I hope I’m not around when it happens.
