I would like to respond to Charlie Summers’ comments about my recent letter to the editor concerning the no-tax pledge.

I want to clarify that I do not support increasing taxes on the hard-working people of Maine and America.

When Rob Caldwell of Channel 6 asked Summers if had he signed the no-tax pledge, Caldwell was referring to the national no-tax pledge that many prominent Republicans have signed.

I believe this pledge was created by a group of conservative millionaires and billionaires to protect their income from any tax increases. Many tax subsidies are in existence for our major oil companies, producers of ethanol, and many others.

By signing this tax pledge, politicians protect the incomes of these wealthy corporations.

As I said before, why would we want to send Summers to Washington if he has signed this pledge and is therefore unable to support elimination of these subsidies?

Maine would be better served if we could elect a senator who was free from this binding pledge and could work for the interest of all Americans, rather than the few.
