STAFF REPORT
Standing water continued to pose a hazard to motorists Tuesday in West Gardiner and Litchfield as residents waited for floodwater to recede.
Motorists should be cautious of standing water on Route 126 near the West Gardiner and Litchfield town lines, said Randy Prince, of the Maine Department of Transportation. The water is on the road near Horseshoe Pond.
“Water has definitely not receded yet,” he said.
As of Tuesday afternoon, three area bridges remained closed: in Gardiner, the bridge on Maine Avenue near Harvey’s Hardware; a bridge on Dennis Hill Road in Litchfield and West Gardiner; and a span on the Plains and Pond roads in West Gardiner and Litchfield, Prince said.
The Bridge Street bridge in Gardiner reopened Tuesday morning.
Thorofare Road in Litchfield remained closed, as did Route 197 in Richmond.
A flood warning for the Kennebec River in Augusta remained in effect until late tonight, according to the National Weather Service.
Over a period of three days, the Augusta area got 3 to 5 inches of rain, causing the Kennebec River to spill into parking lots in Augusta, Hallowell and Gardiner, and small ponds and streams to cover area roads.
