SKOWHEGAN — The island has a new business serving takeout food.
And good news for those missing the former Island Dairy Treat: The new eatery still has ice cream.
Wednesday was the first day open for Mammy’s Kitchen, which moved into the space at 23 Island Ave. after four years operating as a food trailer in the area.
“We’re looking forward to seeing everybody and hoping to have a great summer,” said Lisa Eldridge, who co-owns Mammy’s Kitchen with her partner, Andy Rowe.
Eldridge, 55, of Madison, said her business outgrew the trailer.

And she said she and Rowe are friends with the building’s owners, Jay and Kathleen McGuire, who bought the property in 2024. The purchase ultimately led to the closure of the Island Dairy Treat after 72 years in business, as its most recent owners, Jason and Shannon Curtis, said they couldn’t come to an agreement with the McGuires to continue operating.
Jay McGuire said in the fall of 2024 he wanted the spot to continue to run as some kind of ice cream stand. But the space was vacant through 2025 and the first half of this year.
“They talked to us, and it was like, ‘We’ll give it a shot,’” Eldridge said. “So, here we are.”
Mammy’s Kitchen’s menu includes hamburgers, hot dogs, lobster rolls and fried foods, as well as ice cream — although the frozen offerings are simpler than what the previous ice cream businesses offered, Eldridge said.
The eatery is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and closed Mondays. Eldridge said she plans to stay open through October or November, with the hope to eventually be able to stay open through the winter in future years.

Eldridge said she and Rowe mostly run the business between the two of them, with the assistance of a few family members.
“We’re kind of quiet folk,” Eldridge said. “We’re here to do our thing, see our people, and cook a lot of good food — home cooking.”
