WATERVILLE — Approximately 100 people attended United Way of Mid-Maine’s annual meeting at the Schair-Swenson-Watson Alumni Center at Colby College.

The event’s keynote address “United Way in a Zero Sum Society” was provided by Charles S. Colgan, professor of public policy and management at the Muskie School of Public Service. Colgan served 12 years in the Maine State Planning Office under three governors including positions as Maine state economist and special assistant to the governor for international trade.

Five new directors will join United Way Board of Directors, including Daniel Burgess, MaineGeneral; George Coleman, retired; Michelle Gayne, Kennebec Valley Community College; Butch Merritt, retired; and Bernie Ouellette, Hannaford Bros. The directors will begin their terms July 1.

Recognition awards were also presented at the event.

The Spirit of Partnership Award was presented to the Waterville Area Warming Center Planning Team: David Anderman, Michael Barrett, Janice Kassman, Steve Kelleher, Tom Longstaff, Gary Mahler, Butch Merritt, Courage Osagie, Dana Sennett, Wanda Steward and Rosemary Winslow for their work establishing a daytime warming center in Waterville.

The Spirit of Mid-Maine Award was presented to Donna Pace for her volunteer efforts for both the warming center and the Central Maine CASH Coalition.

The Volunteer of the Year — Chester A. Baker Award was presented to Melissa Higgins and Scott Jones for volunteering their time, talent, energy and enthusiasm in a multitude of ways that far exceeded expectations.
