RANGELEY — An 82-year-old man drowned while swimming off the end of his dock at his summer home on a lake in Rangeley, according to the Maine Warden Service.

Anthony Schulte of New York City did not surface from Cupsuptic Lake on Sunday, said John MacDonald of the Warden Service. His wife, Elizabeth Schulte, witnessed the incident and called 911.

A boater saw Schulte in about 15 feet of water. Rescue personnel brought him to shore and started CPR on him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was the second drowning during the weekend.

Paul Anthony Bernhardt, 20, from Flushing, N.Y., drowned Friday just before dark while swimming in Pierce Pond in Bowtown Township, according to the Warden Service.

He was through-hiking the Appalachian Trail, including nearly 20 miles earlier in the day, and was attempting to swim across a small cove near the pond’s outlet, witnesses told the Warden Service.
