District Game Warden Steve Allaire clutches a Black Duck chick he retrieved Monday on Western Avenue in Augusta. Allaire intercepted a hen and six chicks attempting to cross the busy route at rush hour and retrieved two chicks that become separated from the brood after falling down a storm drain. The mother duck and four chicks walked away and Allaire transported the two babies recovered with a net to a wildlife rehabilitation center.  The chicks were probably only a few days old, Allaire said.
