RYE, N.H. — An organization that monitors a series of ocean buoys in the Gulf of Maine and off southern New England is benefiting from a new round of federal funding.

The New Hampshire-based Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal and Observing Systems monitors buoys from Long Island Sound to Nova Scotia that collect weather and ocean data.

The $2 million from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration represents the second year of funding of a five-year award.

Most of the money is going to association’s operational and research partners to sustain the program’s data collection and forecasting efforts.

Partners include the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, University of Maine, University of New Hampshire, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, University of Connecticut, University of Rhode Island and the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Nova Scotia.
