AUGUSTA — A Mount Vernon man was indicted this week on nearly 60 charges connected to illegal hunting in his hometown.

Joseph A. Deleskey, 38, of 466 Bean Road, is charged with 21 counts of night hunting, 16 counts of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, five counts of loaded firearm in a motor vehicle and four counts each of illegal driving of deer, criminal trespass and hunting deer after having killed one.

Deleskey also was charged with unlawful furnishing of scheduled drugs and a closed season violation.

The indictments, handed up this week by a grand jury in Kennebec County Superior Court, allege misdemeanor and felony charges. An indictment doesn’t determine guilt, but indicates that there is enough evidence to proceed with formal charges and a trial in superior court.

An affidavit that would explain details behind the charges against Deleskey has been impounded by the court.

Maine Warden Service officials did not return messages Friday seeking details on the case.

The crimes Deleskey is charged with all occurred in Mount Vernon over a two-year period, according to the indictment.

In December 2010, Deleskey was fined $100 in Watervile District Court for hunting without a license, according to a published report. The infraction dated to May 15 of that same year in Mount Vernon.

More than a third of the crimes alleged in Deleskey’s indictment occurred within a month of his appearance in district court. The indictment alleges that on Nov. 1, 2010, Deleskey carried a loaded firearm in a vehicle, shot a firearm from a vehicle and hunted at night. As with most of the dates listed in the indictments, Deleskey is also charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

Deleskey is prohibited from carrying a firearm because of a February of 2000 assault with a dangerous weapon conviction in Salem, Mass. District Court.

The indictment lists 11 additional charges against Deleskey spread over four days between Nov. 2-6, 2010. Four additional charges, including furnishing drugs and night hunting, occurred from Nov. 26-28, 2011.

The next batch of charges date to Oct. 13-15, when Deleskey is charged with night hunting, firearm possession by a prohibited person and night hunting. An additional 14 charges date to Nov. 2-5. 2011, including possession of a firearm, night hunting, loaded firearm in a motor vehicle, illegal driving deer (using a group of people in a coordinated effort to push deer through the woods toward waiting hunters), closed season violation for hunting or possessing turkey out of season, hunting deer after killing one and criminal trespass.

The final group of charges allege crimes alleged to have been committed between Nov. 30 and Dec. 4. Those charges include night hunting, loaded firearm in a motor vehicle, hunting deer after killing one, criminal trespass and illegal driving deer.
