SKOWHEGAN — Police arrested a Fairfield man Monday morning on a warrant for felony robbery of a convenience store in October.

Matthew David Libby, 42, was taken into custody in Skowhegan.

Libby was indicted Friday on the Class B robbery charge by a Somerset County grand jury.

He is charged with threatening to use force against a clerk at the Big Apple store in Fairfield Center if the clerk didn’t give him money, according to court paperwork. Assistant District Attorney Brent Davis said he could not comment on the case or on any of the other grand jury indictments handed up last week without clearance from Acting District Attorney Alan Kelley, who is on vacation.

Fairfield police Chief John Emery said Libby walked into the store on Route 104 on Oct. 13, wearing a hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses. He left with an undisclosed amount of cash, but did not display a weapon.

Emery said police did not know the identify of the robber until recently, when Libby said he had committed the crime.

“He was arrested on another charge and fessed up to this one,” Emery said Monday.
