AUGUSTA — Lawmakers will review Gov. Paul LePage’s latest pick to head the Department of Labor on Tuesday.

The governor has tapped Deputy Commissioner Jeanne Paquette to replace current Labor Department chief Robert Winglass. Winglass announced his resignation last month after spending a little over a year on the job.

Democratic lawmakers aren’t expected to quibble with Paquette’s qualifications. However, they may use the hearing to raise questions about the administration’s plans to cut administrative costs for the state’s work force development program and other labor initiatives.

If confirmed, Paquette will be the second commissioner to serve since LePage was inaugurated. The governor has had some difficulty filling the labor post. Winglass agreed to take the position in June 2011 after a long search by the administration. LePage originally nominated Cheryl Russell last year, but Russell withdrew her name from consideration before her confirmation hearings.

The administration said Winglass made a commitment to the governor to serve for one to two years.

Paquette’s appointment will be reviewed by the Legislature’s Labor Committee. It will be subject to confirmation by the state Senate.

The Legislature is expected to reconvene Sept. 6 to consider over 70 nominations by the governor. Confirmation hearings will take place Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Labor Committee hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. A live stream can be heard by visiting: www.maine.gov/legis/audio/lab_cmte.html
