AUGUSTA — A Hermon woman was injured Thursday morning when the car she was riding in drifted off the highway and crashed into rocks along Interstate 95.
Virginia Mattson, 82, a passenger in the car, was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta with what were believed to be non life-threatening injuries, said Maine State Police Trooper Diane Perkins-Vance.
The driver, Sylvanus Tracy, 86, of Hermon, Mattson’s husband, was not injured.
The crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. as Tracy drove a 2004 Honda Accord south on I-95. Tracy, who was in the passing lane, drifted off the left side of the road near mile marker 115 and hit a rock outcropping, Perkins-Vance said. The car rolled over and stopped on its wheels in the median.
Vance said it appears he fell asleep.
Both Tracy and Mattson were wearing seat belts and all of the cars airbags deployed.
Neither speed nor alcohol was a factor in the crash. No charges are expected.
Southbound traffic was reduced to one lane for about 45 minutes as rescuers tended to Mattson and removed the vehicle, which police said was destroyed.
