WATERVILLE — Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, Youth Healthy Lifestyle Program and Let’s Go! recently announced that Educare received a Gold Level Award for 2011-12 program year. Let’s Go! has several priority strategies that must be written in policy and enforced. A principal or director must sign a statement verifying that the policy is enforced for Gold Level Award recognition.

The Let’s Go! priority strategies are: provide healthy choices for snacks and celebrations, limit unhealthy choices, provide water and low-fat milk, limit or eliminate sugary beverages, provide nonfood rewards, provide opportunities for children to get physical activity every day, and limit recreational screen time.

This past year, Educare’s Child and Family Services work included these strategies in their policy, created environmental changes by developing a nutrition and physical activity screening for children, amended the previous outdoor play procedure, updated their family handbook to be reflective of Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0, and offered cooking classes for parents.
