PORTLAND — Top-ranked Cheverus rolled to its 34th consecutive win over three seasons in high school football with a 35-7 win over Portland in the Western Maine Class A playoffs Saturday at Cheverus.
The Stags (10-0) will play Thornton Academy at 12:30 Saturday at Cheverus for the regional championship and a spot in the Class A state final Nov. 17 at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland.
The game will be a rematch of last year’s regional final. Cheverus is seeking its third straight Class A state title.
Donald Goodrich scored three touchdowns for Cheverus. Cheverus’ defense was bidding for its third straight shutout, but fifth-seeded Portland (6-4) scored with just over five minutes remaining in the game. Cheverus scored on its third offensive play of the game and led 21-0 at halftime.
