WINDSOR — A Whitefield woman was killed Friday afternoon in a head-on car crash that also seriously injured another woman, according to Maine State Police.
Killed was Helen Hinckley, 76, of Whitefield, after her Subaru Legacy wagon swerved out of the eastbound lane of Route 17. It hit a westbound Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by Rita Cushman, 65, of Livermore Falls.

Cushman was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with a severe leg cut, police said. The hospital couldn’t provide information on her condition Friday night.
Police said Hinckley may have suffered an unspecified medical issue before the crash, which happened near the Whitefield-Windsor town line on Route 17. Hinckley was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash was reported at 1:50 p.m. near the intersection of Main Street in the Coopers Mills section of Whitefield and the state route, according to Trooper James MacDonald. That section of the busy road was closed for about two hours, until 4 p.m. Friday.
“She crossed the centerline and they hit head-on,” MacDonald said of Hinckley. “There’s really nothing to it besides that.”
It was the third fatal car accident in Windsor this year. A three-car crash Nov. 15 at the Melaney Road intersection of Route 17 left a 28-year-old Augusta man dead and injured four others. On May 13, a Belmont man died when his car went off Route 32 and struck a telephone pole.
