Manchester Planning Board to consider lakeside home, gravel excavation

MANCHESTER — The Planning Board meets tonight to consider requests for construction of a house adjacent to Cobbossee Lake and rock extraction at a gravel pit.

Planners meet tonight at 6:30 at the Manchester Town Office.

The board is scheduled to consider a proposal from Jane Knapp to build a new year-round home on Ware Road, adjacent to Cobbossee Lake, in the shoreland zone, which would be a conditional use.

Board members are also scheduled to conduct a major site review public hearing on a request from Sargent Corp. to extract rock at a licensed gravel pit off Summerhaven Road.

Board members are also scheduled to:

Cony’s Silsby named interim principal

AUGUSTA — Cony High School assistant principal Kimberly Silsby will become interim principal of the school for a year.

The Augusta Board of Education voted last week to have Silsby, an Augusta resident, former member of the Augusta Board of Education, and former state legislator, fill in as interim principal at Cony for a year.

Silsby is one of three assistant principals at the grade seven to 12 school, a job she’s had for two and a half years.

The move is necessary because James Anastasio, principal for the last several years, is filling in as interim superintendent for a year starting Jan. 1.

Superintendent Cornelia Brown is stepping down Dec. 31 to take a new job as executive director of Maine School Management Association. Board members were not able to attract an applicant for the long term superintendent’s post to their liking, so they agreed to hire Anastasio as interim superintendent.

Board members also voted last week to ask city councilors to remove a city charter requirement that the school superintendent live in the city. Board members have said the residency requirement hampered their search for a new superintendent. Removing the requirement from the charter requires a referendum vote by residents.

The school system is seeking a new special education director, to take over for Donna Madore, who was recently named assistant superintendent.

And the system is also seeking a business manager, to take a position left vacant when Karla Miller resigned this month to take a job closer to her home, with Regional School Unit 40 in Union.
