AUGUSTA — Two people accused of carrying out a pair of home invasions in recent months are among the more than 40 people indicted last week by a grand jury in Kennebec County.

Kenneth Joseph Maker II, 26, of Readfield, was indicted on two counts each of robbery and theft by unauthorized taking and one count of burglary in connection with a break-in at a Randolph home.

Heather M. Young, 26, of Augusta, was indicted on a charge of robbery and criminal threatening in connection with a Nov. 17 break-in at a Northern Avenue apartment.

An indictment is not a determination of guilt, but it indicates there is enough evidence to move forward with a trial in superior court.

Maker is accused of breaking into an Elm Street home around 11:15 p.m. on Sept. 22. The 79-year-old homeowner was awakened by a knife-wielding man who demanded that the homeowner open his safe, according to an affidavit filed by Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office Detective David Bucknam.

When the homeowner refused, the intruder punched him in the face and said other people would kill the homeowner’s son, who lived next door, if the homeowner did not cooperate.

The robber got between $10,000 and $11,000 from the safe, according to several people who were interviewed by police. Investigators believe the victim was selected at random.

In the other incident, Young was arrested and charged by Augusta police moments after the Nov. 17 home invasion, during which she reportedly threatened another woman with a gun. Police stopped the car in which Young was riding about 10 minutes after the alleged robbery. Police reportedly found the gun while searching the car.

The driver was charged with operating after suspension and another passenger was arrested on a warrant and charged with drug possession, but only Young was charged with robbery.
